Big Second Half Run Helps Flagler Upset Braves

Box Score

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Home-standing Flagler shot better than 57 percent from the field in the second half and used a 22-7 run midway through the period to snap a 0-for-6 drought in its series with UNCP with an 83-76 win over the visiting Braves on Saturday afternoon in Flagler Gym.

The setback snapped a six-game win streak against Peach Belt Conference East Division teams for UNCP (15-8, 8-5 PBC) who fell for just the second time in its last seven outings as well. The triumph helped the Saints (10-11, 6-8) put an end to a three-game losing streak, while also giving the hosts their first win over the Braves since the two schools began their series in 2009-10.

Shahmel Brackett scored a team-best 19 points for the Braves, who also got a dozen points from Brandon Winford and 10 points apiece from both George Blakeney and Quamain Rose. Ante Gospic scored a game-best 25 points on 8-for-11 shooting to register his eighth double-double of the season and lead Flagler, who also got double-digit scoring from three other players as well. Matt Clark added 15 points for the Saints, while Richard Brown chipped in 13 and Ryan Barnes added 11.

The Braves scored 26 points off of 22 Flagler turnovers and out-scored the Saints 18-6 on second-chance points. Despite ranking 10th among the 14 league institutions in rebounding margin, the Saints equaled the Black & Gold on the boards, 39-39.

UNCP pushed a slight halftime lead out to 10 points, 58-48, on a short jumper by Griffin Pittman with 11:19 to play, but the Saints used a 13-3 run over the next five minutes and gave the contest its fourth tie score with 6:38 remaining on a 3-pointer by Clark. The Black & Gold would miss all five of its attempts from the field in the 5-minute stretch, while Flagler canned five of its nine attempts, including a trio of 3-pointers. The Saints led by as much as eight points, 78-70, after two free throws by Barnes with 42 seconds left.

A back-and-forth game for much of the first half, Flagler opened up a five-point lead on Gospic's lay-up midway through the period, but a layup by Ben Jacobs with 5:48 left before the break sparked the Braves on a 14-6 run that closed the half and gave the visitors a 38-33 lead heading into the locker rooms.

UNCP will open up a short two-game home stand on Thursday when the Braves return home to take on PBC newcomer Young Harris (15-6, 10-4) in the back half of a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader inside the English E. Jones Center.
