Box Score PEMBROKE – Visiting Young Harris scored eight runs with two outs in the top of the first to set the early tone, but needed a late-inning rally to salvage its series with UNCP, 14-12, in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
The setback snapped a three-game win streak for the Braves (16-6, 6-6 PBC) who took the weekend set with the Mountain Lions with a series-opening doubleheader sweep on Saturday. The triumph snapped a three-game losing streak for Young Harris (9-8, 2-7).
Chad Whitehead drove in a pair of runs and scored twice on a 3-for-5 outing to lead the 16-hit charge for UNCP, who also got a 3-for-5 outing from Jordan Edgerton. Dalton Knight (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Brett Huffman (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Drew Alford (2-for-4, 2 R) each managed a pair of hits for the Braves as well, while Zade Denton (1-for-5) clubbed his first home run of the season.
Jack Morrow homered twice and drove in three runs on a 3-for-6 hitting line for Young Harris, while Zach Bricknell hit a 3-run game-tying homer in the ninth inning to highlight a 1-for-5 outing.
Aaron Spano (1-4) lost for the fourth time in his last six appearances after yielding two earned runs on three hits in 1-1/3 innings from the hill for the Braves. Justin Cooper (1-0) grabbed the win for the Mountain Lions after striking out two in two innings of hitless relief for the visitors.
Young Harris used its scoring outburst to lug an 8-0 lead into the second inning, but the Braves scored in each of the next four innings – including multi-run frames in the second, fourth and fifth innings – to take an 11-8 advantage into the sixth. Trailing 12-9 after eight, Young Harris got their first two runners aboard in the ninth, and then used Bricknell's one-out round tripper to knot the score back up.
The Mountain Lions led off the 10th with two-straight singles, and then used David Atwood's two-run knock two batters leader to bring in the go-ahead runs.
The Braves will open up an eight-game road trip on Wednesday when they pack up their show and head to Salisbury for a midweek contest against Catawba (17-5) at Newman Park. First pitch has been set for 3 p.m.
