Phillips's Grand Slam Helps UNCP Clinch Series With Hurricanes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AMERICUS, Ga.Derrick Phillips's grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the first inning proved to be the difference in the outcome as 25th-ranked UNCP completed a series-clinching doubleheader sweep of Georgia Southwestern with a 5-2 win over the Hurricanes on Saturday at Hurricane Stadium.

The result gave the Braves (19-6, 8-6 PBC) their third Peach Belt Conference series victory of the season and marked the sixth win in the last seven outings for UNCP as well. Georgia Southwestern (7-18, 2-11) has now dropped its last eight conference games, having last tasted a victory inside PBC play on February 24 against Armstrong Atlantic at home.

Jordan Edgerton and Dalton Knight both turned in 2-for-4 hitting lines for UNCP who won despite being out-hit (9-7) for the eighth time this season and the third time in the last four games. Phillips's homer earmarked a 1-for-4 day at the plate for the Southern Indiana transfer. Randall Sheffield drove in a run and scored once on a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate for the Hurricanes.

Jordan DeLoatch (2-0) picked up his first decision since an opening-weekend win over Anderson, grabbing the win after scattering eight hits, a walk and a pair of earned runs over six innings from the hill. Dale Innes notched his first save of the season after allowing just one hit in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Matthew Suggs (3-4) saddled the tough-luck loss for the hosts despite surrendering just six hits and striking out four in eight innings from the hill. Suggs allowed five runs, but four of them were of the unearned variety.

Edgerton and Brett Huffman each reached on two-out singles in the first, and Ben Schmucker got to first on a costly fielding error that would set up Phillips's game-changing homer moments later. Georgia Southwestern got on the board via Blane Parker's two-out RBI single in the fourth, but the Braves answered the score with one of their own in the fifth.

Sheffield's RBI single in the sixth would cap the game scoring.

UNCP will look for its first league series sweep of the season on Sunday when they face Georgia Southwestern in the series finale at Hurricane Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
