Bobcats Pull Off Late Comeback In Sixth, 4-3

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Despite controlling the lead throughout most of the second game of the twinbill, the UNCP softball team gave up four sixth-inning runs to Georgia College for the series sweep of UNCP with a 4-3 Peach Belt Conference victory on Saturday evening.

The Lady Braves (14-19, 1-5 PBC) dropped their fifth-straight conference game, while Georgia College (25-11, 3-3) captured its fifth consecutive conference win and 12th victory in the last 14 games.

UNCP out-hit Georgia College by two with sophomore Karlee Wilson going 1-for-3 with a home run to score the Black and Gold's final run of the game. Freshman Whitney Jackson and sophomore Brea Hartley each collected two hits, while Taylor Cloninger, Holly Berry and Shelby Holland each had one. The Bobcats were led by Kristen Brooks with two hits and two RBI.

Junior Natalie Klemann (4-6) suffered her second loss of the series after pitching just 2/3 innings and giving up all four earned runs on three hits following senior Starr Gilley in the middle. Gilley managed 4-1/3 innings with two hits and four strike outs, while junior Katy Austin closed out the game after going one inning. Marisa Boyette dished out eight strikeouts in her complete game for Georgia College, as well as giving up eight hits, four walks and three earned runs.

Clonginger used her first at-bat to reach after being walked and moved around the bases on a Kaytee Wilson sacrifice bunt and Hartley single, before scoring to give the Lady Braves the early lead on the single to center field by Holland. Again in the fourth, Karlee Wilson opened the inning on a base on balls and rounded the bags to score for the first time during the game which gave the Lady Braves a two run lead.

Karlee Wilson blasted her first home run of the season, and fourth of her college career, over the left field fence in the sixth inning to score the final run, however, the Bobcats utilized the bottom of the sixth to seal the victory as five of the seven batters in the inning reached base.

Georgia College doubled and placed Dani Gallucci on after a hit-by-pitch with a single through the right side cutting the lead to two runs. With another single in play, Gallucci scored giving UNCP a one run advantage with the winning run on base. Finally Brooks uses a double to left field to bring around the final two runs for the comeback win.

The Lady Braves will be back on the field in less than 24 hours as the squad travels to Augusta, Ga., to continue conference action against Augusta State (10-16, 4-2) in a 2 p.m. start to the doubleheader.
