Box Score PEMBROKE – Senior George Blakeney's tip-in with 7:17 to play sparked UNCP on a game-changing 15-3 run as the Braves scored 68 second half points and had all five starters score in double figures en route to their school record 13th home victory of the season, 102-91, over Peach Belt Conference regular season champion USC Aiken on Saturday afternoon in the English E. Jones Center.
The triumph was the sixth-straight victory for UNCP (21-8, 14-5 PBC) who finished the regular season in a tie for second in the Peach Belt Conference standings – its best finish since joining the league prior to the 1992-93 campaign. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for USC Aiken (19-7, 15-4) who had captured 11 of its last 12 outings heading into the weekend.
Blakeney matched a game-high with 21 points, but also pulled down 15 rebounds en route to his PBC-leading 15th double-double of the season, while frontcourt mate Brandon Winford notched the second double-double of his rookie campaign with 15 points and 12 boards. Redshirt freshman Quamain Rose scored 19 points and came within one assist of his second-straight double-double outing, while seniors K.J. Cooper and Shahmel Brackett added 17 and 11 points, respectively.
Paul Larsen turned in a team-high 21 points for the Pacers, who also got 17 points from Santoine Butler and 14 points from both Re'mon Nelson and Jesse Seilern.
The game marked the final home contest for UNCP's trio of seniors – Blakeney, Brackett and Cooper – who grabbed the 65th win of their storied careers in the Black & Gold. The trio finished their careers with a 36-19 record in Pembroke, including an astounding 25-5 mark in the Jones Center over the last two seasons. The 65 wins is the most by a senior class at UNCP since the 1994 senior class exited Pembroke with 69 victories.
The Pacers pushed a six-point halftime lead out to double digits just more than a minute into the second half, but UNCP scored 24 of the game's next 33 points to grab a five-point advantage, 60-55, on a 3-pointer by Griffin Pittman with 12:18 to play. Aiken knotted the score back up on Ronald Zimmerman's trey at the 7:40 mark, but the monster run that followed was just too much to overcome. The hosts led by as much as 16 points, 95-79, on a pair of free throws by Cooper with 2:32 remaining.
UNCP controlled the game for a majority of the first half as well, but USC Aiken capped a 13-4 run with 4:03 left before the break to grab a lead it would retain for the remainder of the period. Kinley Branch's running layup with 12 seconds left before the intermission gave the Pacers a 40-33 advantage, but Winford was fouled on the other end of the court with one second left and connected on the first of two free throws to cut it to a two-possession game heading into the locker rooms.
UNCP will be in action again on Friday when it heads to Columbus, Ga., for the 2013 Marvin Vanover Peach Belt Conference Tournament inside Columbus State University's Frank G. Lumpkin Center. The brackets for the postseason gala will be released following the conclusion of other league games on Saturday evening.
