Braves Fall To Montevallo In PBC Tournament Semifinals

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Montevallo shot better than 72 percent in the second half and used a late 7-1 scoring spurt to pull away from UNCP en route to an 81-73 win over the Braves in the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Saturday evening.

The loss dropped the Braves (22-9) to 0-6 all-time against the Falcons (20-8) who will advance to Sunday's championship game against USC Aiken inside Columbus State University's Frank G. Lumpkin Center. The setback snapped a seven-game win streak for the Braves as well.

Brandon Winford scored a team-high 14 points for UNCP, while K.J. Cooper added 13 points and Shahmel Brackett registered a dozen. Troran Brown scored a game-best 23 points for the Falcons, while Jonas Brown drained five 3-pointers en route to 17 points and Drico Hightower added 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field.

A back-and-forth affair for much of the first 12 minutes of the second half, Montevallo took the lead for good on Marvin Fitzgerald's layup at the 8:00 mark. The Falcons pushed their lead out to double digits, 77-67, and capped the momentum-changing 7-1 spurt on Troran Brown's free throw with 1:02 left to play.

UNCP shot nearly 52 percent in the opening half and led by as much as 10 points, 38-28, on a dunk by Blakeney with 6:39 left before the intermission, but the Falcons used a nearly five-minute scoring drought by the Braves to fuel an 11-1 run and tied the game at the 1:31 mark on a layup by Jonas Brown. Quamain Rose hit the back end of a two-shot foul 49 seconds later to give the Black & Gold a 40-39 edge heading into the locker rooms.

The Braves, who were ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Southeast Region poll that was released on Wednesday, will now have to wait until Sunday evening to learn their postseason fate. The 2013 NCAA Tournament Selection Show will be streamed live at 10:30 p.m. at NCAA.com.
