Braves Reach Benchmark, Even Series With Flying Fleet

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DUE WEST, S.C. – UNCP rallied back from a late 2-1 deficit with 10 runs in the eighth inning and the 14th-ranked Braves reached the 30-win milestone for the ninth-straight season with a series-tying 13-7 win over Erskine in the front half of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Grier Field.

UNCP (30-11) fueled the series-tying effort with 16 hits – the 29th time this season that the Braves have put up 10 or more hits. It was the fifth loss in the last six games at Grier Field for the Flying Fleet (23-20) who scored a 9-3 upset of the Braves in the weekend opener on Friday.

The visitors got multi-hit showings from six different players, including 3-for-5 outings from Jordan Edgerton (3 RBI), Ben Schmucker (2 RBI) and Drew Alford (1 R). Victor Zecca drove in three runs and scored three times on a perfect 2-for-2 tally, while Brett Huffman (2-for-5) and Drew Cole (2-for-4) managed a pair of hits as well.

Chase Corn hit a grand slam in the eighth – his second homer in as many days – and drove in five runs on a 3-for-5 hitting line for the hosts. Austin Gambrell scored twice on a 2-for-4 day at the dish as well.

Southpaw Jordan DeLoatch (4-1) scattered nine hits, two walks and a pair of unearned runs over seven innings from the mound to grab his fourth win of the season. Joe Johnson (2-1) allowed one hit and a trio of unearned runs in the eighth to take the loss for the Fleet.

Erskine took a 2-1 lead on Hanlon Maivelett's two-out double in the seventh, but the Braves sent 15 batters to the plate and took advantage of a seven hits, two free passes and a three fielding errors to bring 10 runs across the plate. The Flying Fleet would answer with five scores of their own in the bottom of the frame, including Corn's grand slam, but the Braves plated a pair of insurance runs in the ninth to secure the win.
