Edgerton, Braves Rattle Barton In Rematch

Box Score

PEMBROKEJordan Edgerton homered twice to lead an offensive explosion behind a phenomenal outing from freshman Logan Cook as 10th-ranked UNCP avenged a mid-March loss to Barton with a 12-3 throttling of the Bulldogs on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

UNCP (32-11) has now won seven of the last nine matchups with the Bulldogs (17-22) who captured a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the Braves in Wilson on March 19. The Braves have now captured 12 of their last 15 outings since that setback.

Edgerton finished the night with a career-best six RBI and four runs scored on a 4-for-5 performance, with three other Braves turning in multi-hit nights to fuel the hosts' 31st double-digit hit attack of the season. Drew Alford singled three times and scored once on a 3-for-4 outing, Drew Cole (RBI, R) tallied a 3-for-4 hitting line and Daniel Fraga drove in a run and scored once on a 2-for-4 night at the plate.

Max Gagnon singled and later scored in his only official at-bat of the night after shattering a school record (tied Peach Belt Conference record) with sacrifice hits in each of his first three trips to the plate. Five different players recorded base hits for Barton, including Phillip Williams (1-for-4) who belted a solo homer in the seventh.

Cook (4-1) won for the second time in six days after striking out five and yielding a pair of base hits and an earned run in seven strong innings from the mound. Starter Ricky Jernigan (0-1) saddled the loss for the visitors after allowing three earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in six innings of work.

Edgerton's first homer of the night – a two-run shot with nobody out in the fourth – gave the hosts a 2-0 lead, but the Braves left no doubt in a game-changing sixth inning that saw them plate six runs on five hits. Edgerton's 3-run blast in the eighth provided some insurance runs.

The Braves will close out the home portion of their 2013 schedule this weekend when they suit up to battle PBC nemesis Armstrong Atlantic (24-12, 14-9 PBC) in a three-game series at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open the weekend set on Friday at 7 p.m. and close out the series with a 2 p.m. Senior Day doubleheader on Saturday.
