Big Innings Help Pirates Clinch Series With UNCP

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PEMBROKE – Visiting Armstrong Atlantic scored in each of the first six innings, including a trio of multi-run frames, and cruised to a series-clinching 13-8 victory over 10th-ranked UNCP in the front end of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Sammy Cox Field.

The setback handed the Braves (32-13, 16-10 PBC) its first series loss since early March, while also putting a damper on Senior Day festivities for the Black & Gold. It was the 1,309th career coaching victory for Armstrong Atlantic (32-13, 16-10) skipper Joe Roberts who became NCAA Division II's all-time winningest coach with the triumph.

Max Gagnon homered twice and drove in four runs on a 3-for-4 outing for UNCP, while Daniel Fraga singled three times and scored twice on a 3-for-5 day at the dish. Brett Huffman (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Jordan Edgerton (2-for-5, RBI) and Zade Denton (2-for-5, R) registered multi-hit outings for the hosts as well.

Chris Fritts doubled three times and scored twice on a 4-for-5 day at the plate for Armstrong who got two hits apiece from five other players as well.

Jordan DeLoatch (4-2) was saddled with the loss after yielding nine runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk in just 2-1/3 innings of work. Ethan Bader (6-0) stayed unbeaten on the campaign despite surrendering seven earned runs on a dozen hits and five walks in 5-2/3 innings from the mound. Caleb Woods allowed just one earned run on four hits over the final 3-1/3 innings to grab his second save of the season.

UNCP erased an early 4-0 deficit with four runs of its own in the bottom of the second, but the Pirates scratched the scoreboard for five more runs in the third and led 11-4 after plating two more runs in the top of the fourth. The Braves got RBI knocks from both Edgerton and Huffman in the bottom of the inning, but Armstrong plated lone insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.
