Box Score MISENHEIMER – Visiting and 18th-ranked UNCP scored runs in five different frames, including multi-run efforts in the fifth and seventh innings, to rally back from an early deficit and upend Pfeiffer, 10-9, on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field.
The triumph snapped a season-long three-game skid for the Braves (33-14) who also closed out the non-conference portion of their 2013 schedule with the outing as well. It was the sixth-straight loss for the Falcons (18-30) who also fell for the sixth-straight time in the 27-game-old series with their Black & Gold counterparts as well.
Jordan Edgerton added to his nation-leading hit total by scoring once on a 2-for-5 outing, while Daniel Fraga clubbed his first home run of the season and plated a pair of scores on a 1-for-3 showing. Drew Alford (2-for-5, RBI) and Max Gagnon (2-for-3, BB, RBI) each registered a pair of hits for the visitors as well.
Pfeiffer got a trio of hits from three different players, including Tyler Summers who hit a pair of homers and added four RBI on a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Aarin Sharpe doubled twice on a 3-for-4 performance, while Daniel Furr (3-for-4) singled three times on four trips to the plate for the hosts as well.
Logan Cook (5-1) allowed six earned runs on nine hits in 5-2/3 innings from the hill, but did just enough to win his third-straight decision, while Patrick McMahon notched his fifth save of the season despite yielding two earned runs on four hits and a walk in two innings of relief. Keith Little (0-1) saddled the loss for Pfeiffer after allowing six earned runs on four hits and a walk in 4-1/3 innings of work. He also struck out two.
Summers's first homer of the game helped Pfeiffer forge a 3-2 lead in the fourth, but the Braves took the lead for good after sending eight batters to the plate in a 4-run fifth inning. Pfeiffer climbed to within a run after back-to-back homers from Summers and Kevin Price in the sixth, but UNCP capitalized on a three hits and a costly error in the seventh to plate a trio of insurance runs.
The Falcons scored lone runs in each of the seventh and eighth frames, and then got the tying run aboard with two outs in the ninth, but McMahon induced Price into a game-ending groundout to nix the threat.
The Braves will close out their regular season-ending four-game road trip this weekend when they head to Augusta, Ga., for a three-game series with Augusta State (10-33, 3-21) at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The series will get underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and conclude with a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday.
