Box Score PEMBROKE – Visiting Coker pounded out 14 hits and rode every arm of its weekend pitching staff the rest of the way out to help the Cobras post an 8-4 upset of 11th-ranked UNCP on Wednesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
The setback snapped a four-game win streak for UNCP (26-9) who came into the game riding a hot streak that had seen it capture 13 of its last 16 outings. It was the fifth-straight victory for Coker (23-11) who has now taken three of the last five meetings with the Braves as well.
UNCP got base hits from eight different players in the outing, including a 2-for-3 hitting line from Dalton Knight. Daniel Fraga singled, doubled and scored once on a 2-for-5 night at the plate as well. The Cobras got multi-hit efforts from five different players, including Shea Bell who walked and scored twice on a perfect 3-for-3 outing. Keith Wolf crossed the plate on a 3-for-6 performance as well.
Connor Pratt (1-2) took the loss for the Braves after surrendering three earned runs on five hits and two walks in just 1-2/3 innings from the mound. Dan Meyer (4-3) picked up the win for the visitors by striking out four and allowing just two earned runs on five hits in 4-1/3 innings of relief. Zach Loraine, who managed two hits as the starting designated hitter, also picked up his 12th save of the season after striking out two and allowing a trio of hits in 2-1/3 scoreless innings.
Coker took a 2-0 lead on Frank Suarez's two-run single with two outs in the top of the first and never looked back. The visitors scored lone runs in the last five innings to secure the win going away.
The teams combined to strand 24 runners on the base paths, including 14 by the Cobras.
UNCP will close out a four-game home stand this weekend when it battles Peach Belt Conference nemesis Francis Marion (17-13, 10-7 PBC) in a three-game series at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open up the set with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before closing out the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. single game.
