Wilson Drives In Victory For UNCP With Three-Run Homer, 9-0

MOUNT OLIVE – Sophomore Kaytee Wilson sent a deep blast into leftfield to score three runs in the fifth inning, before chipping in another three RBI in the sixth and scoring on sophomore Brea Hartley's homer to run rule Mount Olive in the second game of the doubleheader for a 9-0 shutout victory on Tuesday.

The Lady Braves (20-31) snapped a five-game losing streak with the win and ended the game with 13 hits as Hartley and Kaytee Wilson notched three hits. Junior Taylor Cloninger and sophomore Karlee Wilson added two hits each, while seniors Holly Berry and  Kellie Van Dyke and junior Shelby Holland added one apiece. Four different batters posted one hit for Mount Olive (25-9).

Junior Natalie Klemann (7-11) competed all six inning for UNCP as she faced 23 batters and only gave up four hits for the win. Klemann held Mount Olive to four or less batter in five of the six innings. Lauren Smith (5-4) finished 5-1/3 innings and allowed five earned runs on nine hits before Madison Johnston grabbed two outs with four earned runs on four hits.

UNCP began the scoring campaign in the fifth inning with Karlee Wilson and Cloninger both reaching on a base hit to center field and, in the next at-bat, Kaytee Wilson homered to left field to drive in the three runs. 

The Lady Braves showed no mercy in the sixth inning as Holland, Van Dyke and Karlee Wilson each singled to load the bases, before Cloninger drove in Holland with another base hit. Continuing with bases loaded, Kaytee Wilson used a double to right field to score all three runners for a seven run lead. 

Finally, Hartley put UNCP up two more runs with her home run over the left field fence to score herself and Kaytee Wilson for the shutout win.

UNCP and Mount Olive split the series this year at two wins apiece. The Lady Braves have collected five shutout victories and have won five games due to run rules this year.

The Lady Braves (20-31) will close out Peach Belt Conference action on Thursday with their last home contest of the season against Francis Marion (24-24, 8-12 PBC). The first game of the doubleheader set for 4 p.m. at LRA Field.
