Carter Named Semifinalist For Tino Martinez Award

Box Score

OMAHA, Neb.Ethan Carter added another recognition to his ever-growing repertoire on Wednesday as the first team all-Peach Belt Conference selection and PBC Pitcher of the Year was among 40 players named as a semifinalist for the 2013 Tino Martinez Award.

The award is presented to the most outstanding player in DII college baseball. The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, United States Olympian, first round draft pick and MLB All-Star Tino Martinez.

Carter, a native of Newport News, Va., currently sports the nation's eighth-best earned run average, having recorded a 9-1 record, a 1.36 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 73 innings of work this season. The senior grabbed wins in each of his first nine starts of the season and has held opponents to a paltry .204 batting average while surrendering just 54 hits and walking only 11. Carter has already recorded a trio of complete games, including shutouts of Columbus State and Young Harris. He has averaged 7.0 innings per start in 2013 and has gone at least eight innings in four of his outings, while also striking out eight or more batters in four different games as well.

There are 40 semifinalists with five players representing each of the eight NCAA Division II regions. In year's past there were at least six players from each region; however the process has been modified slightly and this year each school has been limited to a single player advancing to the semifinal round.

Initial nominations for the award were made by baseball sports information contacts and media members. A panel of media, coaches and sports information officers will be polled to finalize the candidates. The group will once again vote on the finalists, with a fan Internet vote also contributing to the crowning of the winner.

The finalists are scheduled to be named on Monday, May 20th. The winner will be announced after the conclusion of the DII Baseball Championship held in Cary, May 25-June 1.
