PEMBROKE – Newcomer Sara Lundberg netted the game-winning goal off of a deflection with only four seconds remaining on the clock to give the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over the visiting Pfeiffer Falcons on Wednesday evening at Varsity Grounds.
After going nearly 20 minutes without taking a shot, UNCP (2-1-0) freshman Savanna Stiles took a direct kick as the result of a foul by Pfeiffer (0-3-0). Stiles' 20 yard kick was deflected, but Lundberg got off one last shot that reached bottom right side of the goal with the final seconds ticking off the clock. The victory marked the seventh-straight time that UNCP has beaten the Falcons, and improves the Lady Braves to 11-1-0 all-time against Pfeiffer.
"You really can't script a better ending," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "It was a well-fought game. We played well the first 25-30 minutes, and then got a little rattled and gave up a goal. We were able to level it going into half. I thought that, if you look at the statistics, we really dominated the second half, but we couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. That sometimes gets a team down, but our team has a lot of character and heart and we just kept coming at it. To score a goal with four seconds left in the game, that really shows the character of these kids."
Following a yellow card on the Lady Braves, Pfeiffer's Katlyn Stevens scored, sending the ball into the upper right corner of the goal to put the Falcons up 1-nil in the 41st minute of play. Less than two minutes later Julia Nytorp gave UNCP its first goal of the night with an assist from Rae-Shawna Campbell.
The Black and Gold dominated Pfeiffer taking 27 shots throughout the game compared 16 from the falcons. Both squads totaled four corner kicks, two coming in each half. Pfeiffer played aggressive, racking up 14 fouls and two yellow cards, while UNCP had 10 fouls and one caution of their own.
Nytorp notched a goal in the first half to tie the game up at 1-1, and Lundberg added the game-winning goal in the second half. Campbell took a team-best eight shots, while Lundberg fired off six shots, including four shots on goal. The Falcons' only goal-scorer of the night was Stevens. Pfeiffer was led by Kayla Rodriguez and Stevens who chipped in five shots and three shots, respectively.
Senior Britney Bennett spent all 90 minutes in goal and grabbed seven saves. Pfeiffer's goalkeeper Kate Halligan gave up two goals despite finishing with nine saves.
"There are no easy wins in the Peach Belt Conference," Andersson said. "We talk about that every year. We never take anything for granted in this league. The minute you do, it will come back and smack you in the face. We are out for three points and any point in the PBC is crucial."
The Lady Braves will be back in action again on Saturday when they step back into Peach Belt Conference play to host Georgia Southwestern (0-2-0, 0-0-0) in the front half of a women's and men's doubleheader at Varsity Grounds. Kickoff has been slated for 1 p.m. Admission to all 2012 UNCP soccer home games is free.
