PEMBROKE - Returning to the field to open Peach Belt Conference action, the 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's soccer team shut out visiting Georgia Southwestern on Saturday afternoon as the Braves punched in two rebounded shots and were successful on a penalty kick to finish the match with the 3-0 win.
Newcomer Kevin Vigebo put the Braves (3-1-0, 1-0-0 PBC) on the board and claimed his first goal of the season in the 11th minute as he collected the rebound from the goalkeeper and drilled the shot in the net for the game-winning goal. Defenders James Casserly and Payne Clark made their mark on the play as they gathered the only assists of the game.
At the 30:39 mark, sophomore Rico Laitinen extended the lead with his precise penalty kick following a foul inside the box. Fellow sophomore Adam Smith attempted a ride side shot, but was halted and dropped by the netminder, in which he followed for the rebound to amass the final goal at the 51:52 mark.
"We are very happy because we had a good response from the game against Wingate, which was disappointing," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "We had to adjust a few things and correct some things over the last few days, but I think the guys did well so I am very happy with the win."
Senior Ryan Hanson posted his second shutout of the season following 90 minutes between the posts and held onto just one save. Georgia Southwestern (0-1-3-0, 0-1-0) began with Joe Cullip in goal who allowed all three goals in his 69:19 of action and four saves, before being relieved in Ryan Tucker who finished the 20:41 with two saves for the Hurricanes.
The Black and Gold combined for 20 shots, 10 of which were on goal, including 12 shots in the second half. UNCP out-shot Georgia Southwestern 8-1 in the first half and 12-3 in the second half, while also controlling all 10 corner kicks. Smith and Vigebo each logged five shots, while Laitinen and Sam Miles added four for UNCP. Chad Hoffman led the Hurricanes with two shots.
The Hurricanes finished the contest with 19 fouls compared to UNCP's nine as Georgia Southwestern was awarded both yellow cards.
The Braves will head back out on the road to face Barton (0-2-1) in a non-conference mid-week contest in Wilson, N.C. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Barton Soccer Field.
