"We don't go into overtime to try and sit in and preserve a draw, we go in and try to win it. We certainly did and had an opportunity on a free kick and came very close to putting the ball in the back of the net. Then we made some very carless mistakes and had a five minute spell where we struggled to get the goal out of our own end and the end result is we give up a goal with a minute and six seconds left in the first overtime," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson.
After a fairly quiet second half from the Black and Gold, sophomore Rae-Shawna Campbell netted her first goal of the season, tying the match up at 1-1. The shot was just the Lady Braves' second of the final 45 minutes. Campbell found the back of the net from 18 yards out, after an assist from Michelle Hernandez. The Bulldogs tried to prevent overtime, taking three shots, two of which were on goal, before the end of regulation, none of which were successful.
"We made some changes in the second half and I'm proud of the girls. We played much better and pulled the goal back and got back to 1-1 with just a few minutes left in the game," said Andersson.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute after an assist from Montgomery found Brooke Howell who scored on the break-away. The UNCP offense was stagnant for the majority of the first half, taking only three shots, two registering on goal.
Campbell took three of the Black and Gold's seven team shots, while Amber Watkins fired off another two shots for UNCP.
"Montevallo is a great team and we respect them tremendously. They're like any other Peach Belt foe, if you don't play well, you don't come out on top. We'll take a day off to rest and then we'll spend two days preparing."
The Lady Braves will return to the pitch on Saturday when they step back into Peach Belt Conference play and travel to Montevallo, Ala. for a conference battle with Montevallo (0-2-1, 0-0-0 PBC) in the front half of a women's and men's doubleheader at Varsity Field. Kickoff has been slated for 2 p.m.
