Clayton State Overpowers Women's Soccer

Box Score

MORROW, Ga. – The UNC Pembroke women's soccer was outmatched offensively by Clayton State on Saturday as the Lady Braves suffered a 4-0 loss in Peach Belt Conference action at Laker Field.

The Lakers (5-3-1, 2-0-0 PBC) handed UNCP (4-3-0, 2-1-0) its first PBC loss of the season and have now won two straight against the Black and Gold. Clayton State improves to 8-4-2 all-time against the Lady Braves.

Clayton State held UNCP to just two shots in the first half as the Lakers fired off 14 shots in the first 45. Throughout the match Clayton State outshot the Black and Gold by an 18-6 margin. The Lakers played aggressive, picking up 12 fouls compared to just three from UNCP. Both squads picked up cards at the 49 minute mark, UNCP drawing a red card while the Lakers earned a yellow card.

UNCP keeper Britney Bennett completed 90:00 minutes between the posts, and despite giving up four goals collected five saves on the night. In the net for Clayton State Charlotte McCormack recorded a perfect 90:00 minutes and finished with four saves.

"Tonight's game was a huge disappointment, not only did we out played, we lost our composure. We have always played like champions and strive hard to act with class regardless of the outcome of the game. We failed to do so tonight and I take full responsibility for what happened and will make sure we address it immediately. When the ship is taking on water, you can either man the pumps or head for the life boats. We intend to do the former," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson

The Lakers opened up the second half with Denisha Paskell's ninth goal of the season coming in three minutes in. Paskell found the back of the net on an assist from Melissa Hetherington, giving Clayton State the 3-nil advantage. Clayton State scored again to complete the 4-0 shutout in the 67th minute as Lois Edvardsson connected on a corner kick from Saidbh Collins.

Paskell notched the game-winning goal on a steal, as she beat two UNCP defenders on a breakaway 24 minutes into the contest. Less than 10 minutes later Hetherington scored on a shot to the upper right corner of the box on an assist from Emily Walling. UNCP was unable to take a shot for the final 15 minutes of the half, the only two shots of the half coming from Rae-Shawna Campbell and Carolina Sanchez.

The Lady Braves will look to rebound on Wednesday as the squad heads to Savannah, Ga., to face No. 23 Armstrong Atlantic (3-1-2, 1-1-0) in a PBC tilt at Armstrong Soccer Field, with first kick set for 3:30 p.m.
