Women's Soccer Falls To Catawba, 1-0, In Double Overtime

Box Score

SALISBURY – Catawba's Amy Iwanicki scored in the 102nd minute of action to push the Indians past the visiting UNC Pembroke women's soccer team in a regional contest on Saturday evening at Frock Field.

The setback marked the first of the season for the Lady Braves (1-1-0) and the second-straight overtime loss to the Indians (1-1-0). Catawba improves to 5-3-0 all-time against UNCP after picking up its first win of the 2013 campaign.

"I thought for being only our second game of the season it was an extremely well played soccer game between two teams that are showing some real promise for this season. Both teams played well and showed some real heart and determination. I'm obviously disappointed in the loss, but given that we're starting five players who are donning their UNCP jerseys for just the second time, I'm pleased with the way we played. We're headed in the right direction," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "Catawba played well and the game could have gone either way, but today it went their way. I congratulate them and wish them the best of luck throughout the season. I'm taking some positives out of today, we played well and we're continuing to build, we'll be ready for Pfeiffer on Wednesday."

Rae-Shawna Campbell led the Lady Braves, taking five shots, including three shots on goal. Freshmen Savanna Stiles and Carolina Sanchez added two shots apiece, Stiles getting both shots on goal. UNCP lost the battle of corner kicks, taking only three kicks from the corner compared to nine from Catawba. Out of 15 total shots for the Indians, only three were on goal. Mary Kirkman fired a game-high six shots, while Juliana Conte recorded the only assist of the match after setting up Iwanicki for the game-winning goal.

Both keepers, UNCP's Britney Bennett and Angelica Pawlowski of Catawba, recorded 102:24 minutes in the net. Bennett tallied two saves for the Lady Braves, and Pawlowski finished with eight saves of her own.

The Lady Braves return to the pitch on Wednesday when they open their 2013 home campaign hosting Pfeiffer (0-1-0) at Varsity Grounds in Pembroke at 6 p.m. Admission into all 2013 home soccer matches is free.
