No. 18 Georgia Southwestern Overpowers Men's Basketball, 80-68

AMERICUS, Ga. – Quamain Rose, Jihad Wright and Keysheen Hinton each shared a team-high 12 points for the visiting UNC Pembroke men's basketball team, however No. 18 Georgia Southwestern shot 55.6 percent from the field to take the 80-68 victory in Peach Belt Conference action on Friday evening in the Storm Dome.

The Braves (11-4, 2-3 PBC) suffered their second-consecutive loss in league play, while the nationally-ranked Hurricanes (12-1, 4-0) remained undefeated in PBC competition and continued with a two-game winning streak.

Junior Ben Jacobs was a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, while fellow forward Brandon Winford also added 10 points and clinched seven rebounds for the Black and Gold. Rose pulled down eight boards and went 2-for-4 from the 3-point line.

The Black and Gold endured 11 turnovers during the contest and forced the Hurricanes to 21, which supplied 20 points for UNCP off those turnovers.

Georgia Southwestern was led by Darius Redding with 18 points including going 9-for-14 from the charity stripe, while Jamon Hawkins and Alan Arnett contributed 16 and 15 points, respectively. Jonathan Brooks tallied the only double-double of the game with 11 points and 14 rebounds and Daryl Davis registered 13 points.

The Hurricanes outrebounded the Black and Gold 42-38, but the Braves collected 20 points off second-chance shots compared to the nine by Georgia Southwestern. Both teams held close to each other through the first eight minutes of the contest, but the Hurricanes pulled ahead by 13 points with 6:27 left in the first half. 

The Braves tied up the contest at the 4:20 mark and UNCP took its largest lead of five points with 1:10 left before halftime on a jumper by Reggie Cobia. UNCP entered into the half with a three-point lead, however Georgia Southwestern shut down the Braves' offense and led by 15 points with 5:18 left in the game to take the 12-point win.

The Braves will close out their three-game road streak on Sunday in a 3:30 p.m. matchup with Columbus State (7-5, 1-4) in Columbus, Ga.
