Women's Basketball Haunted By Turnovers In 80-59 Loss At Georgia Southwestern

Box Score

AMERICUS, Ga. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team felt the effect of 29 turnovers, as home standing Georgia Southwestern scored 34 points off of turnovers en route to an 80-59 victory over the Lady Braves on Friday night in a Peach Belt Conference contest inside of the Storm Dome.

The setback marked the fourth-straight for the Lady Braves (5-7, 1-4 PBC), while the Lady Canes picked up just their second win all-time against the Black and Gold.

"They jumped on us early and forced us to turn the ball over. Even though we played decent defense, they just made shots. It was a poor effort from us in the first half, and a great effort by them. I thought we did battle hard and play hard in the second half, it was just too little too late," said UNCP head coach John Haskins

Despite the loss, UNCP out-rebounded its opponent, 42-31, and received 37 points from the bench, compared to just 29 points from the Georgia Southwestern bench. Defensively, Kierra Haney led all players, grabbing 12 boards, including nine defensive rebounds, while freshman Jasmine Huntley turned in a career-best rebounding performance, finishing with 10 rebounds. Two Lady Braves contributed double-figure scoring nights, as Jazmine Kemp and Jonissa Monley, tallied 19 points and 12 points, respectively.

The Lady Canes offense was powered by an impressive perimeter attack. Georgia Southwestern connected on 10-of-25 (40.0 percent) of its shots from downtown, including seven 3-point buckets in the first half. Four players finished with double-digit points, with a team-best 19 points coming from Danyelle Jones. Jones also dished out 10 assists to earn a double-double on the night. Shaniece Sheffield chipped in 14 points, while Sanedra Lockett and Sierra Barino-Kennedy added 10 points apiece.

Georgia Southwestern came out of the break with a 28-point lead over the Lady Braves, and didn't let up any throughout the second half. The Lady Braves worked from behind and shot 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from the floor during the final 20 minutes, but it was not enough to make up the deficit.

Shatoria Hudson got the scoring started for the home team with a jump shot at the 19:40 mark, which sparked a 14-2 opening run for Georgia Southwestern. Midway through the first half the Lady Canes made three-consecutive 3-point baskets, extending their lead to 37-16. With 1:29 to go before halftime, a layup from Lockett gave Georgia Southwestern its largest lead of the game, 51-21.

UNCP will close out its three-game road trip on Sunday in Columbus, Ga., when the Lady Braves battle Columbus State (8-3, 3-2) on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the Lumpkin Center.
