PEMBROKE – Ben Jacobs stepped in front of an inbounds pass and hit an 18-foot baseline jumper at the buzzer to force overtime, but the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot just 1-for-10 from the field in the extra period and committed a pair of costly turnovers en route to an 81-74 loss to visiting Lander on Wednesday evening.
The setback marked the fourth-straight loss for UNCP (11-6, 2-5 PBC) who also had its three-game series winning streak snapped in the process as well. Lander (10-6, 4-3) has now won six of its last seven contests since a mid-December home loss to the Braves.
Brandon Winford scored a team-high 18 points and came within a rebound of notching his sixth career double-double to lead UNCP, who also got 15 points from Griffin Pittman and 11 from Quamain Rose. Jacobs registered just six points in the outing, but managed to log four rebounds and a career-best four blocks as well.
Freshman J.R. Washington erupted for a game-best 26 points on 10-of-11 shooting, including a torrid 6-for-7 success rate from the perimeter, to pace the Bearcats. Michael Panaggio turned in 18 points as well, while Jareal Smith added a dozen.
The Bearcats logged a season-best 10 3-pointers in the outing, while the Braves won the rebounding battle (43-38) for the first time in their last four contests.
"They have been playing really well as of late, and they have a really good team," said UNCP head coach Ben Miller. "We just need to find a way to get more stops. We were pretty good in the first half, but they had a lot to do with our second half defensive performance. They executed well and got some good shots and made the ones that they needed to."
The Black & Gold took the first lead in overtime on a pair of Pittman free throws with four minutes left to play, but Lander answered with an 11-2 run that put the game out of reach. The Braves made it a two-possession game after two more free throws by Pittman with 51 seconds left, but missed their last three shots of the game – all 3-pointers – to seal the outcome.
The Bearcats trailed for much of the first 27 minutes of Wednesday evening's tilt, but Lander used an 8-2 scoring spurt midway through the second half to tie the game at 49 apiece, and then led for much of the final nine minutes of regulation.
Rose gave the Black & Gold a three-point lead, 66-63, on a lay-in with 2:29 left in the second period, but the visitors scored the game's next five points to take the momentum back. Jacobs jumped in front of Panaggio on an inbounds pass from Smith and dished the ball to Rose near the bench. Not able to find a good look, Rose returned the ball back to Jacobs who nailed the long jumper as the buzzer went off to send home crowd into a frenzy.
The Braves will continue their three-game home stand on Saturday when they suit up to battle PBC West rival Clayton State (5-9, 1-6) in the back half of a 1:30 p.m. basketball doubleheader in the English E. Jones Center.
