Women's Basketball Snaps Skid, Haskins Hits Milestone

Box Score

PEMBROKE
– Behind the brace of double-doubles from Kierra Haney and Jazmine Kemp, the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak to defeat Lander, 66-56, as head coach John Haskins became the winningest coach in UNCP women's basketball history, on Wednesday evening inside of the English E. Jones Center.

With the win, Haskins earns his 114th career win as the head coach of the UNCP women's basketball team (6-8, 2-5 PBC), passing Lalon Jones to become the most successful coach in the 40 years of the program.

Haney finished the night with 14 points and 12 rebounds, picking up her sixth double-double outing of the season, while Kemp grabbed a double-double of her own with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The two junior forwards combined for a 44.4 percent (12-for-27) shooting night from the field, and an 80 percent (4-for-5) success rate from the charity stripe. Also chipping in double digit scoring for the Black and Gold was junior Avae' Hardy who tallied 12 points on a 5-for-8 (62.5 percent) performance from the field.

The Bearcats (8-8, 3-4) were paced by Alexis Armstrong and Ashleigh Zandi with 14 points apiece, as Portia McCray added another 11 points to round out the double-figures scorers for Lander. Perimeter shooters stayed active throughout the game, but with little success, as the Bearcats connected on just 7-of-37 (18.9 percent) shots from behind the arc.

"We still made some mistakes in terms of being strong with the basketball and some box outs down the stretch, but I thought we did some things well, and the big thing is we attacked offensively," said Haskins. "I also thought our defense was fairly solid, we had a stretch in the first half where we didn't get matched up in transitions and we gave up some easy ones, but except for that I thought our defense was pretty solid."

UNCP made the first two shots of the game on back-to-back jumpers from Hardy and Kemp, but the Bearcats would hold the Lady Braves scoreless for nearly four minutes, as the visitors jumped ahead, 12-6, seven minutes into the game. Airico Williams hit consecutive 3-point buckets for the Black and Gold to tie the game at 14-14 just before the midway point. The first half remained a back and forth battle until the Lady Braves went on an 11-4 run to close out the half and take a 32-22 lead into the break.

The Lady Braves controlled the tempo throughout the final 20 minutes, leading the entire way and by as much as 15 at the 6:40 mark. With four minutes left in the game, Jasmine Huntley drained five free throws, while Kemp drilled a jumper for the final points of the game.

UNCP returns to the court on Saturday to host PBC foe Clayton State (9-5, 4-3) in the Jones Center. Tip is set for 1:30 p.m. in the front half of a basketball double header. Saturday's game is family day and all kids will be admitted free. Also stick around after the game for an autograph session with the Braves.
