PEMBROKE
– The visiting Clayton State Lakers proved to be too much for the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team, as the Lakers defeated the Black and Gold, 73-40, on Saturday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference matchup inside of the English E. Jones Center.

Clayton State (10-5, 5-3 PBC) extends its win streak over the Lady Braves (6-9, 2-6) to nine-straight games, while improving to 15-7 in the all-time series.

"I thought they were stronger, they were more aggressive, more experienced and they executed better. Our youth showed today. Kierra Haney played well and had a good game. We got some open looks in the first half, but just didn't score. We just didn't execute well and we weren't aggressive enough against their zone," said UNCP head coach John Haskins

Haney powered UNCP with her second-consecutive double-double. The Tabor City native pulled down 10 rebounds and scored 14 points. Haney finished the day shooting 5-of-11 (45.4 percent) from the field, along with 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line.

The Lakers had four players finish with double-figures points, including a game-high 19 points from Shacamra Jackson. Jackson and Kayla Pryce combined for eight of Clayton State's 3-point shots, with four triples apiece. Pryce turned in 14 points, while Andrea Benford and Tiayra Green contributed 11 points and 10 points, respectively. The Lakers were able to take advantage of UNCP mistakes, converting 20 turnovers into 24 points.

UNCP took a 3-0 lead at the start of the game and held the Lakers scoreless for the first three minutes of the contest, but the Clayton State offense was sparked by a 3-point basket from Kayla Price that led to a 13-2 run over the next seven minutes. The Lakers controlled the pace until halftime, shooting 44.1 percent (15-of-34) to take 38-17 advantage into the break.

Despite their best efforts, the Lady Braves could not make up for the halftime deficit, as Clayton State continued to roll, leading by as much as 34, 63-29, at the 5:51 mark. UNCP tried to close the gap with a 10-4 run where freshman Jasmine Huntley scored five-straight points, but the Lakers closed out the game with a jumper from Kiana Morton.

The Lady Braves will look to rebound on Monday at home as the squad hosts Montevallo (5-10, 2-6) in a 1:30 p.m. PBC contest in the Jones Center.
