Hot Shooting Helps Men's Basketball Upend Georgia College

Box Score

PEMBROKE –
Four of the starters for the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team notched double-digit shooting including 76 of the squad's 86 points coming from the initial five to take down the visiting Georgia College Bobcats, 86-70, in Peach Belt Conference action on Thursday evening in the English E. Jones Center.

The triumph was the second-straight victory for UNCP (11-2, 2-1 PBC) who have now logged the best 13-game start since joining the league prior to the 1992-93 campaign. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Georgia College (5-5, 1-2) who had captured 12 of its last 13 outings in the series heading into the contest.

Junior guard Griffin Pittman carried the game-high in scoring with 21 points and was 7-for-12 from the field including 4-for-5 from the 3-point line, while sophomore Quamain Rose managed 19 points and connected on four of his six arc shots to go 6-for-13 from the field. Big man Brandon Winford was just two points shy of matching his career-high in scoring as he was 7-for-9 from the field with 16 points and six rebounds, while Ben Jacobs led the team with nine rebounds and added 14 points with his 6-for-7 shooting from the field.

"I thought in the first half that both teams shot well and I wasn't really pleased with our defensive field goal percentage, but we cut down their percentage in the second half and played a little more zone so our guys did a good job of adjusting," said UNCP head coach Ben Miller. "Overall, we took care of the ball, had 23 assists and 11 turnovers, and that was a big key to the game."

Alex Bradley led the Braves with a career-high eight assists, while Rose dished out seven, grabbed eight rebounds and picked up three steals.

Terrell Harrris turned in a team-high 20 points for Georgia College, who also got 14 points from Tyan Blumenthal and 13 points from Royal Thomas. Overall the squad shot 42.6 percent from the field and was 9-for-12 from the charity stripe.

Heading into the half with only a three-point lead, the Braves picked up the defensive press and held the Bobcats to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field in the final 20 minutes of action. The Black and Gold finished the contest shooting 56.9 percent from the field and 61.5 percent from the 3-point line, while also out-rebounding Georgia College, 40-27, which resulted in 22 second-chance points for UNCP.

Georgia College collected 14 points off the seven bench players to see time on the court, while UNCP subbed in just three players who tallied 10 points including seven from forward Reggie Cobbia. Each team suffered 11 turnovers, but the Braves picked up six total steals during the process.

The Braves opened up the contest with two arc shots by Rose and Pittman to put the Black and Gold up by six, but the Bobcats proceeded to take a six point lead at the 13:59 mark in the first stanza. However, UNCP took its largest of 18 points in the final 20 seconds after holding the lead with 5:50 remaining in the first half.

UNCP will open up a three-game road trip on Sunday when it travels to Augusta, Ga., to lock horns with PBC East rival GRU Augusta (10-2, 3-0) in Christenberry Fieldhouse. Tip off has been slated for 4 p.m.
