PEMBROKE – Visiting Georgia College extended its season-long win streak to 10 games on Thursday evening, as the Bobcats used a strong second half to defeat the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team, 68-48, in the first contest of 2014 inside of the English E. Jones Center.
With 40 seconds remaining in the first half, Wayne Mack hit back-to-back jump shots to tie the game at 26-26. LaRice Walker answered back for the Bobcats (10,0 3-0 PBC) by draining a 3-pointer, but then with just one second to go before the intermission, Jazmine Kemp drilled a triple of her own to set the score at 29-29 heading into the break.
The half started slow, neither team scoring during the first two minutes of action. Georgia College got on the board first with a made free throw from Abby Slocumb, and the Lady Braves (5-5, 1-2) used two free throws from Kemp for their first points of the night. Thresia Elskamp nailed a 3-point bucket right before the first media timeout that would help spark a 10-2 run, giving Georgia College a 22-11 advantage, but the Black and Gold worked to inch their way back into the contest before heading to halftime.
The Bobcats pulled ahead early in the second half, scoring nine-straight points to take a 43-34 lead at the 13:52 mark. UNCP was able to cut the deficit to five, 45-40, following a 3-point basket from Kierra Haney and a free throw from Kemp, but Georgia College regained control, going on a 10-0 run. Mack completed the three-point play with six seconds left on the clock, but the Bobcats would remain perfect with the 68-48 victory.
"They're 10-0 for a reason, they're a very solid team. We just got beat on the boards tonight. They're just a strong, physical, grind it out team. I thought we did a pretty good job there for a while, and we were in striking distance there in the second half, but we just missed a bunch of free throws," said UNCP head coach John Haskins.
Kemp used a double-double to pace the Lady Braves, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The junior forward was 4-of-5 (80 percent) from the charity stripe and pulled down a game-high 10 defensive rebounds. Katelyn Mitchell tallied nine points, while Mack chipped in another seven points to the losing effort.
Georgia College out-rebounded the home team, 52-27. Walker and Enisha Donley led the way, turning in 19 points apiece, and Brandi McKinney rounded out the double-figures scoring with 14 points. The Bobcats connected on a 10-of-23 (43.5 percent) from the perimeter and finished with a 66.7 percent (10-of-15) success rate from the free throw line.
The Lady Braves return to the court on January 5th in the first match of a three-game road swing. The Black and Gold will travel to Augusta, Ga., to face off with GRU Augusta (6-4, 2-1) at 2 p.m. in the Christenberry Fieldhouse.
