Montevallo Pushes Past Women's Basketball With Second Half Comeback

Box Score

RELATED: Women's Basketball Outmatched By Clayton State

PEMBROKE – Despite a six-point lead going into the second half, the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team was stopped by Montevallo, after the Falcons worked their way back into the contest to earn a 62-59 Peach Belt Conference victory on Monday afternoon inside of the English E. Jones Center.

"I thought there were three different areas where we lost this game. The first one was the first six minutes of the game, we just couldn't score. I didn't think we were aggressive enough and we couldn't score. Then the second stretch was probably the first five minutes of the second half. We struggled offensively but we gave them too many easy shots. And the last stretch was when we missed eight free throws in a row," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "We were coming back and had the chance to take the lead and really put some pressure on them, but we just stepped to the line and missed free throws. We had some chances, but those three stretches really hurt us."

The Falcons (6-10, 3-6 PBC) erased the halftime deficit by opening the second half with a 9-2 run, bringing the score to 33-30 at the 16:34 mark. Montevallo stayed in control the rest of the way, leading until the final buzzer. UNCP (6-10, 2-7) kept the game close, as a tip in from Kierra Haney brought the Lady Braves within two, 61-59, but three consecutive free throws put the game away for the visitors.

With the victory, Montevallo earned its first win all-time against the Lady Braves. However, UNCP still holds the all-time series advantage, 4-1.

Taylor Beverly led the way for the Falcons with 20 points, while Shay Bonner came off the bench to chip in another 16 points for the Montevallo offense. Beverly added 11 defensive rebounds to earn a double-double.

UNCP was paced by Jazmine Kemp who turned in a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Kemp finished the night shooting 50 percent (7-for-14) from the floor, and connecting on four free throws. Keeping the Black and Gold hot from the perimeter, Kamille Horne shot 33.3 percent from behind the arc to total 13 points. Freshman Jasmine Huntley rounded out the double-figures scorers with 10 points. Defensively, Haney tallied double-digit rebounds for the third-straight game, grabbing a game-high 13 boards.

The Lady Braves were haunted by free throw trouble, being held to just 10-for-21 (47.6 percent) success rate from the charity stripe, but found virtue from 3-point territory, shooting 46.2 percent (6-for-13) from downtown during the first half .

The game opened with a 7-0 Montevallo run, as the Falcons kept the Black and Gold scoreless for the first five minutes of the contest. Horne put the Lady Braves on the board with a 3-point basket. At the midway point, Kemp scored six-straight points, and a triple from Airico Williams tied the game up at 16-16. Another 3-pointer from Horne sparked a 12-point run, closed out with a bucket from behind the arc by Kemp, gave UNCP a 28-20 advantage. Katie Colson drained a layup with two seconds before the halftime buzzer, but the Lady Braves would take a 28-22 lead into the break.

Next up the Lady Braves will travel to Savannah, Ga., for a Thursday evening contest with Armstrong Atlantic (9-5, 4-4). Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. inside of the Alumni Arena.
