PEMBROKE – Visiting and 25th-ranked GRU Augusta shot 67 percent from the field in the second half and used a 17-5 run midway through the period to key a 92-70 victory over the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in the English E. Jones Center.

The Jaguars (15-3, 8-1 PBC) have now won 14 of their last 16 outings, including both meetings with the Braves this season. The setback marked the seventh loss in the last eight outings for UNCP (12-9, 3-8) who opened up a three-game home stand on Saturday in the Jones Center.

Quamain Rose scored a team-best 17 points to lead a quartet of UNCP players with double-figure scoring days. Reggie Cobia turned in 11 points, six rebounds and a pair of steals in just 14 minutes on the floor, while Ben Jacobs came off the bench to post 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Brandon Winford chipped in 10 points and tallied eight rebounds for the hosts as well.

Devonte Thomas scored a game-high 18 points for GRU Augusta, while K.J. Sherrill earned his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 boards. Keshun Sherrill added 16 points for the visitors as well.

"We had some good spurts in the first half, and they just took off in the second half," said UNCP head coach Ben Miller. "It was a combination of them playing well and some defensive breakdowns by us. To beat a team like that, you're going to have to play very well and, obviously, we did not."

Unable to shake the Braves for the first seven minutes of the second half, a 3-pointer by D'Angelo Boyce at the 13:01 mark ignited the 17-5 run that gave the visitors a 65-53 advantage following an old-fashioned 3-point play by Keshun Sherrill with 8:30 remaining. K.J. Sherrill's short-range jump shot six minutes later would cap a 12-0 run that pushed the lead out to 23 points.

A 3-pointer by Keysheen Hinton at the 11:06 mark in the first half sparked the Braves on a 10-0 run that gave the hosts a 23-16 lead with 5:52 left before the intermission, but the Jaguars answered with a 16-4 run to claim a five-point lead on Keshun Sherrill's perimeter bucket just more than four minutes later. The visitors would eventually tote a 34-30 advantage into the locker rooms.

The Braves will continue their three-game home stand on Thursday when they welcome I-95 rival Francis Marion (7-9, 4-6) to the English E. Jones Center for Military Appreciation Night. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. and fans are asked to wear black to honor our veterans at the event.
