PEMBROKE – Visiting GRU Augusta used a 46.7 percent (21-for-45) shooting performance to defeat the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team, 63-40, on Saturday afternoon inside of the English E. Jones Center.

The Jaguars (9-7, 5-4 PBC) opened the game going 15-for-26 (57.7 percent) from the floor in the first half. Jemimah Ashby paced the GRUA offense with 11 points, while Brooke McCants and Tavia Sykes logged 10 points apiece.

Kierra Haney turned in nine points and eight rebounds for the Lady Braves (6-12, 2-9), who were held to just 26.9 percent (14-for-52) shooting. Jazmine Kemp finished the night with another six boards, as UNCP earned the rebounding advantage, 35-34.

"We didn't attack the zone like I thought we should have, in terms of getting in the gaps and getting in the post. But even when we did do good things, we just didn't make shots. I thought our defense was very poor the first half, maybe a little bit better in the second half. The whole game we just didn't execute well," said UNCP head coach John Haskins.

The first half remained close until a trey from Becky Newhouse sparked a 9-2 Jaguar run. GRUA continued to pull ahead of the Black and Gold, but back-to-back jumpers from Avae' Hardy and Ashley McCray would bring the score to 38-22 heading into halftime.

GRUA quickly stretched its lead to 20, 44-24, within the first four minutes of the second half, and led by as much as 27, 50-27, at the 13:02 mark. UNCP tried to work its way back into the game scoring seven-straight points, to set the score at 58-38, but the effort was too little too late as the Jaguars ended the contest with a 3-point bucket from Marissa Mandeldove.

The Lady Braves return to the court on Thursday to face PBC rival Francis Marion (10-6, 5-5) on Military Appreciation night in the Jones Center. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. in the front half a UNCP basketball double header. Thursday's game is a 'Black Out' and fans are encouraged to wear black to the game.
