Women's Soccer Thwarted By Armstrong State In Double Overtime

Box Score

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's soccer team negated an early 1-0 deficit with a 28th minute goal by Courtney Crump, but visiting Armstrong State used a 107th minute Golden Goal by Jenny Allen to slip by the Braves, 2-1, in double overtime on Wednesday evening at Varsity Grounds.

The setback marked the second-straight loss for UNCP (5-3-1, 2-2-0 PBC) who fell to 0-10-3 all-time in the series with the Pirates. It was the third-straight victory for Armstrong (6-2-0, 2-1-0) whose only losses this season have come to top 12-ranked foes.

Crump registered her third goal of the campaign on a team-best four shots, while Amber Watkins tallied her fifth assist of the season. Goalkeeper Janae Aiken collected eight saves in just less than 107 minutes between the pipes for the hosts. Allen scored both goals for the visitors.

Allen took hold of a crisp pass from her sister, Michelle, in the ninth minute (8:31) and fired a shot past Aiken to the far post to give Armstrong the early advantage, but Crump evened things up in the 28th minute (27:45) by schooling a pair of defenders and getting the better end of a 1 v. 1 situation with ASU goalkeeper Morgan Luckie.

The Pirates out-shot the Black & Gold 2-1 in both extra periods en route to a 21-16 shot advantage in the contest.

The Braves will open up a four-game road trip on Saturday when they trek to St. Augustine, Fla., to battle Flagler (3-5-0, 2-1-0) in the front half of a 5 p.m. soccer doubleheader at Saints Field.
