Box Score MOUNT OLIVE – The UNC Pembroke women's soccer team scored a pair of first half goals and never looked back as the Braves finished off a perfect road trip with a 3-0 blanking of Mount Olive on Tuesday evening at Amon Field.
The victory marked the fourth-straight win for the Braves (9-3-1) who moved to 6-0-1 in road games this season. It was the second loss in the last three outings for the Trojans (5-7-1) who fell to 1-9-0 all-time against UNCP. The result also put an emphatic cap on the non-conference portion of the 2014 schedule for the Black & Gold who finished 4-1-1 against non-Peach Belt Conference schools.
Rae-Shawna Campbell got the scoring started with the eventual game-winner in the seventh minute of the contest – her team-leading eighth goal of the campaign and fourth of the game-winning type. Katie Watkins and Lovisa Gustafsson both scored one goal apiece, while Amber Watkins recorded a pair of assists. Savanna Stiles also picked up her seventh assist of the campaign as well.
Janae Aiken needed to stop just one shot on goal, but nabbed her third-straight shutout, and fourth of the season, nonetheless.
"The weather and field conditions were a bit challenging, but I am proud of the girls for keeping their focus on the game itself," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We arrived with a purpose in mind and took care of business. It was a complete team effort with every healthy player getting valuable playing experience. We now shift our focus to an incredibly challenging North Georgia match on Saturday."
UNCP's smothering defense proved to be too much for Mount Olive who mustered just three shots, including just one strike in the second half. It was the second time in three games that the Braves have limited their opponent to five shots or less.
UNCP will be back in action again on Saturday when it opens up a short two-game home stand against 10th-ranked North Georgia (11-1-0, 5-0-0 PBC) in the front half of a 5 p.m. women's and men's soccer doubleheader at Varsity Grounds.
