Box Score MARS HILL - Junior Sam Miles led the onslaught on goal as he registered two scores and two assists, while a trio of other UNC Pembroke men's soccer players logged a goal each to help the visiting Braves record their fourth shutout of the season with a 5-0 rout of Mars Hill in regional play on Tuesday evening.
The victory was the second-consecutive for the Braves (4-4-3) and sixth win in the series between the two schools, while Mars Hill (5-6-0) saw its two-game winning streak snapped.
Miles started the scoring campaign for UNCP with his fifth goal of the season coming early at the 9:49 mark on the assist by newcomer Nathan Legge who passed the ball into the box for Miles to beat the keeper to post the game-winning goal and put the Black and Gold up at the half.
Just 40 seconds into the second stanza, defender Tom Devitt connected on a header off of a free kick by Miles to tally his first goal of the season and put UNCP up 2-0. Miles put the Black and Gold up by three with his second goal of the game and sixth on the season at the 61:40 mark on a cross pass from fellow senior Brett Luccia.
Luccia turned in his goal on a give-and-go from Miles less than two minutes apart from the final goal by Kevin Vigebo at the 74:19 mark as he collected his shot from 25 yards out on the assist by Legge to end the game with a 5-0 win.
Freshman Kenneth Perkinson held onto three saves during the contest for UNCP, while Oliver Pannell saw time between the pipes for Mars Hill with only two saves and five goals allowed.
The aggressive game brought about two yellow cards and a combined 22 fouls. Miles led the Braves with three shots, while Branco Theis, Vigebo and Luccia each posted two. Christian McArthuf, Alex Mullen and Thomaz Freitas took two shots for the Lions.
UNCP will make their way back to Varsity Grounds on Saturday evening with a 7:30 p.m. matchup against Peach Belt Conference foe North Georgia (3-7-1, 2-2-0) in Pembroke.
