Box Score DUE WEST, S.C. – With two seconds remaining in regulation, Erskine's Joe O'Neill drilled in the game-winning goal off a loose ball in the box to push the Flying Fleet past the UNC Pembrokemen's soccer team, 2-1, on Tuesday evening at Huggins Field in regional play.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for UNCP (5-5-3), while Erskine (7-5-2) stayed undefeated in the series with the Braves.
NSCAA Player of the Week Sam Miles opened up the scoring effort with a 52:07 goal on the long pass from senior Kevin Vigebo for the lead following a scoreless first half, but Andrew Settlemire chipped in the equalizer for Erskine less than 18 minutes later on a header.
Despite out-shooting Erskine, 17-9, the Black and Gold battled to the final buzzer, but the aggressive game of 28 combined fouls and four cautions tipped in favor of the Flying Fleet at the 89:58 mark for the 2-1 win.
Freshman goalkeeper Kenneth Perkinson grabbed two saves in his 90 minutes between the posts, but surrendered both scores, while Nicholas Willenborg picked up an evening-best eight saves for Erskine. Miles led the Braves with six shots, including four on goal, while Vigebo added four and Branco Theis tallied three.
The Braves opened up the game with an attack on goal by Tom Devitt and continue with another seven shots before the half, while the UNCP defense kept Erskine out of Black and Gold territory.
The Braves will compete in their last home game of the season on Saturday as the Black and Gold hosts Peach Belt Conference leader Young Harris (10-0-1, 5-0-0 PBC) at Varsity Grounds at 1:30 p.m. Admission to all 2014 home soccer matches is free.
