Francis Marion Snaps Volleyball's Three-Match Win Streak

PEMBROKE – Visiting Francis Marion hit .348 and capitalized on 33 attack errors by the UNC Pembroke volleyball team to key a 3-1 victory (25-11, 28-26, 25-27, 25-21) over the Braves in Peach Belt Conference action on Friday evening in the English E. Jones Center.

The setback snapped a three-match win streak for UNCP (14-16, 2-11 PBC) who had its league skid stretched to three matches with the outcome as well. The triumph put an end to a three-match losing streak for the Patriots (7-15, 4-9) who finished off a season sweep of the Black & Gold with the result as well.

Nicole Mathews turned in 16 kills and was one of five players to post double-digit digs (16) on the night for the hosts. Caroline Pridgen tallied 10 kills for the Black & Gold, while Sabrina Gonzalez recorded a double-double outing with 40 assists and 16 digs.

Caroline Boone hit .457 and registered a match-best 20 kills for Francis Marion, who also got 11 kills and 13 digs from Alexzandra Reed. Sloane Shank added a match-best 42 assists for the visitors as well.

Francis Marion scored 12 of the first 15 points in the opening set and held UNCP to a -.065 hitting percentage in posting a 25-11 victory, and then hit .121 in the second set and took advantage of 11 attack errors by the Braves in skating out to a 2-0 lead with a 28-26 triumph in the second set.

The Braves hit .255 and slipped by the Patriots to get on the board with a 27-25 third-set victory, but the Patriots finished off the Black & Gold with a 25-21 win in the fourth set.

UNCP will be back in action again with a pair of matches in Savannah, Ga., on Wednesday. The Braves will battle PBC-leading and 17th-ranked Armstrong State (20-1, 13-0) at 3 p.m. before taking on King (14-9) at 5 p.m. Both matches will take place inside ASU's Alumni Arena.
