Box Score PEMBROKE – Visiting and fifth-ranked Young Harris got a hat trick with its first three goals from Ilija Ilic and an additional score in the final 15 minutes by Kendall Carballo to capture the 4-0 shutout win over the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference action on senior day at Varsity Grounds.
The loss marked the second-straight for UNCP (5-6-3, 3-3-2 PBC), while Young Harris (12-0-1, 7-0-0) extended its winning-streak to 12 games and inched closer to claiming the league regular season championships.
Freshman netminder Kenneth Perkinson registered a trio of saves in the effort for the Braves, but gave up all four goals including a pair in each half. Senior forward Sam Miles led the Braves with three shots, two of which were on goal, while Kevin Vigebo, Sid Peterson and Branco Theis each contributed one shot.
The Mountain Lions opened up the scoring campaign at the 18:33 mark as Ilic received a quick pass inside the box from Paco Craig before turning around in the 42nd minute to put Young Harris up by two goals as a hand ball in the box put Ilic in place for a penalty kick. Coming out of the half, Ilic chipped in his third and final goal of the game as his first shot was blocked, and using the rebound from the block, send the ball flying into the back of the net.
Finally, Carballo used a long 30 yard pass from Andre Johansson at the 75:38 mark to close out game with the 4-0 win. Goalkeeper Jordan Bradshaw spent all 90 minutes between the posts and picked up three saves. Young Harris finished the contest 22 shots as Ilic, Carballo and Craig Quinn each tallied five shots.
In the first 10 minutes of the contest, UNCP evenly matched the nationally-ranked Mountain Lions and put pressure on the Young Harris goal, but the aggressive game that saw a combined 26 fouls, 14 of which were on the Black and Gold including the solo yellow card of the game, slowed as Young Harris challenged the Braves' defense for a majority of the game.
UNCP will close out PBC regular season action on Wednesday evening with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against USC Aiken (10-3-1, 4-2-0) in Aiken, S.C.
