Newberry Slips By Football To Spoil Homecoming

Box Score

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke football team limited visiting Newberry to just 237 yards of total offense, including just 74 in the first half, but an early defensive score proved to be the difference in a 13-6 victory for the Wolves on Saturday evening at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.

The setback marked the fifth-straight loss for the Braves (1-6) who celebrated homecoming in front of more than 3,800 fans in Pembroke. It was the second-straight series victory for Newberry (3-5) who snapped a two-game losing streak with the result.

Quarterback Seth Owen threw for 99 yards on 13-of-24 passing to pace the UNCP offense, while B.J. Bunn hauled in six catches for 37 yards as well. L.J. Stroman recorded 123 yards on five returns to spearhead a phenomenal special teams effort for the hosts, including a 37.5 average on a pair of punt returns.

Raleigh Yeldell ran for 71 yards on 21 carries for the visitors, while also throwing for 45 yards on 8-of-13 passing as well. The Wolves forced three turnovers on the day, including a pair of interceptions.

Four different players recorded a game-high eight tackles for UNCP's Code Black defense, including Dominique Bridges who tallied seven solo tackles, including two tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.

The Braves drove 32 yards on eight plays on their opening possession of the contest before Owen scampered in from 10 yards out to give the hosts the early lead. Despite mustering just four yards of offense in the opening quarter, Newberry lugged a 7-6 lead into the second period after Sharon Irwin picked off Reggie Pinner deep in Newberry territory and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown to give the Wolves the lead for good.

Kyle Clark converted on a 30-yard field goal with six minutes left in the second quarter, and then capped the scoring on the day with a 31-yard field goal late in the third period.

The Braves looked to have all the makings of a game-tying drive late in the fourth quarter, but were turned away despite making their way all the way down to the Newberry 16-yard line.

UNCP will be back in action again on November 1 when the Braves head to Greeneville, Tenn., to take on Tusculum (3-5) at Pioneer Field. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
