Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke women's soccer used a 67th minute goal by Amber Watkins to offset an early deficit, but neither team was able to find the game-winner as the Braves settled for a 1-1 tie with USC Aiken on Wednesday evening at Pacer Pit.
The result helped UNCP (10-3-3, 6-2-2 PBC) stretch its unbeaten streak out to seven games, while also letting the Braves put the finishing touches on an unbeaten (6-0-2) regular season mark away from Pembroke. The draw snapped a two-game losing streak for the Pacers (6-7-3, 4-4-2) who remained winless in 14 series meetings (11-0-3) with the Black & Gold.
"I think that this game illustrates the quality of the Peach Belt Conference," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "There are no easy games. We did not play particularly well in the first half, but we ended up with a 1-1 draw on the road. We're going to take the positives out of this in that it is a point on the road in the PBC. Although we are disappointed in the result, we showed a lot of character and a lot of heart in coming back after going down early.
"I thought that we had ample opportunities to win the game toward the end, but I have to give USC Aiken a lot of credit – if it had not been for a couple of outstanding saves by Janae (Aiken), we would have lost the game in the end. She was just absolutely sensational between the pipes."
Watkins scored for the fifth time this season to highlight the UNCP offense which also got a game-best four shots from Courtney Crump. Hannah Allison netted a 36th minute (35:28) goal for the Pacers, but missed the final 12 minutes of overtime after being sent off (red card) in the 98th tick. Megan Smits logged a team-best three shots for the hosts.
Janae Aiken tallied eight saves between the pipes for the Braves, while her counterpart, Nicole Cranny, turned in four saves for the Pacers.
UNCP got the better end of an 8-5 shot disparity in the opening half, but USC Aiken out-shot the Braves by a 7-1 count in the second period. Watkins scored at the 66:06 mark on what would prove to be the only shot of the second half for the visitors.
The Braves will be back in action again on Saturday when they close the book on their regular season schedule by hosting No. 7 Columbus State (14-0-1, 9-0-0) at Varsity Grounds. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and will be preceded by a Senior Day ceremony that will honor UNCP's Class of 2014 – Kerinn Hall, Julie Fisher, Michelle Brown, Cassie DeQueiroz and Michelle Hernandez.
