MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – After taking a hard fought first set, the UNC Pembroke volleyball team dropped the next three sets to Georgia College in Peach Belt Conference action on Friday evening in the Centennial Center for the 3-1 loss with set scores of 26-24, 22-25, 20-25 and 24-26.
UNCP (8-11, 0-6 PBC) lost its third-straight match, while Georgia College (7-7, 2-5) clinched its second league win and extended its winning-streak to two games.
Junior Nicole Mathews carried a game-high 18 kills and 16 digs, while setter Sabrina Gonzales was the other Brave with a double-double performance with 44 assists and 13 digs. Jada Vernon and Caroline Pridgen slammed down 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while Ka'asha Jefferies and Josephine Yang each tallied double digit digs.
Georgia College's Maggie Roper finished the game with 17 kills and 17 digs, but was unable to assist the Bobcats in out hitting UNCP (54-53). The Bobcats denied UNCP's hitting with 10 block assists and four solo blocks, while Cecilia Brandon led UNCP at the net with a trio of block assists.
A battle in the first set slide in the favor of the Bobcats after a tied score at 10-10, but serving by Vernon and Yang gave UNCP the two point lead. Again with a tied score at 24-24, Vernon stepped up to the line to serve and an attack error on Georgia College set up set point for the Braves. Vernon delivered a service ace for the win in set one as the Braves hit .195 from the net.
Despite leading in set two 10-5, the Bobcats went on a 14-5 run to take the lead and tie the game at one set each. In set three, the two squads went back-and-forth and with a tied score at 15-15, Georgia College inched away on a four-point run to take the third set. Similar to the first set with a game tied at 24-24, Georgia College took the final points after a kill by Roper for the victory.
UNCP will look to capture its first PBC victory on Saturday in a 2 p.m. against GRU Augusta (13-4, 4-2) in the Christenberry Fieldhouse.
