PEMBROKE – Visiting and seventh-ranked Columbus State scored twice in a dominant first half effort and held off a handful of late scoring opportunities by the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team en route to a 2-0 victory over the Braves on Friday evening at Varsity Grounds.
The setback snapped a seven-game unbeaten streak for the Black & Gold (10-4-3, 6-3-2 PBC) who finished the regular season with a 4-4-1 clip in Pembroke. It was the 13th-straight victory for the Cougars (16-0-1, 11-0-0) who put the caps on a perfect regular season record inside league play.
Rae-Shawna Campbell logged a team-best two shots for the Braves who were out-shot by a 19-1 margin in the first period. Goalkeeper Janae Aiken registered nine saves for the hosts – the eighth time this season that the San Antonio, Texas, product has made seven or more saves in a game.
Nicole Corcione and Mandy Janowitz each recorded their sixth goals of the season for the visitors, while Kelsey Pelletier and Ashley Miller each tallied assists. Maylyn Parsons did not need to record a save in wrapping up her ninth clean sheet of the campaign.
The Cougars registered the game's first 19 shots and used a goal by Corcione in the 27th minute (26:49) and a score by Janowitz in the 36th minute (35:23) to take a 2-0 lead into the break. The Braves grabbed two of the first five shots in the second half and nearly got on the board in the 70th minute (69:01), but were unable to convert on an empty-net opportunity.
The Braves will battle Lander in the opening round of the PBC Tournament on Tuesday. A site and time are still to be announced.
