GREENWOOD, S.C. – The visiting UNC Pembroke women's soccer team got goals from three different players to support an extremely stingy defense and the Braves coasted to a 3-0 shutout of unbeaten Lander on Wednesday evening at the Jeff May Complex.
It was the fifth win in the last seven outings for UNCP (7-3-1, 4-2-0 PBC) who improved to 4-0-1 away from Pembroke this season. The setback marked the first loss of the season for the Bearcats (4-1-3, 2-1-2) who are listed in the No. 5 spot in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Southeast Region poll.
Reining Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week Courtney Crump recorded her first collegiate game-winning goal, but the Braves also got scores from freshmen Katie Watkins and Lovisa Gustafsson in the rout. The Black & Gold defense registered a dominant effort in which it surrendered just five shots (0 on target), including just one strike in the second half. It was the third clean sheet of the season for goalkeeper Janae Aiken.
Kimberly Kesler tallied a team-best four shots for Lander who fell to 7-7-3 all-time in the series with the Braves.
"It is safe to say the most complete game that we have played so far this season," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "I thought that we were solid all the way through from our goalkeeper to our forwards. I am incredibly proud of our team. They did everything that we asked for in the pregame speech and they carried out the game plan 100 percent. I couldn't be more pleased. It was pure joy standing on the sideline watching them play."
UNCP scored each of its first two goals on set pieces as Crump converted on a penalty kick in the 12th minute (11:48), and Watkins redirected a 65th-minute corner kick by Savanna Stiles into the back of the net for a 2-0 cushion. Gustaffson capped the scoring on the day with a goal in the 87th minute (86:25) off of an assist by Rae-Shawna Campbell.
The Braves will continue a four-game road trip on Saturday when they head to Milledgeville, Ga., to take on Georgia College (2-7-1, 0-5-0) in a 2 p.m. contest at Bobcat Field.
