PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot nearly 50 percent from the field and used a monstrous 20-4 run late in the second half to key an 81-49 victory over Southern Wesleyan in the final game of the 2014 McDonald's Classic on Saturday evening in the English E. Jones Center.
The win pushed the Braves to 4-0 for the second-straight year and the second time since the 1999-00 campaign. It was the second-straight loss for Southern Wesleyan (2-4) who suffered a tight 68-67 loss to Georgia Southwestern in the opening game of the event on Friday in Pembroke.
Reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week Brandon Watts scored a game-best 13 points to lead a trio of Braves with double-figure scoring nights. Senior Griffin Pittman registered 11 points to go along with five assists and four rebounds, while Keysheen Hinton came off the bench to add 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field. Thirteen different players scored points for the hosts.
Kenny Holmes turned in a team-best 10 points for the Warriors who shot just less than 35 percent from the field on the night.
"(Southern Wesleyan) really started the game very well, but fatigue set in as the game went along. They played hard, but I think they just ran out of steam," said UNCP men's basketball head coach Ben Miller. "Hopefully, we had something to do with that. I thought that we were sluggish to start the game, but we got a lift from the bench to get us going. I thought that we shared the ball very well and had really good balance. Our challenge right now continues to be to work on team execution. There was a lot of good things tonight though."
The Braves opened the second half with a 12-4 run to pad its lead out to 17 points, 49-32, just more than five minutes into the second half and then used the big run to turn it into a runaway.
A neck-in-neck game for the first 14 minutes of the night, a free throw by Watts with 5:42 left before the break sparked UNCP on a 13-4 run to close out the opening stanza and allow the hosts to lug a 37-28 lead into the lockerroom.
The Braves will continue a four-game home stand on Monday when they lace up to battle Allen (0-5) in a 7 p.m. contest in the English E. Jones Center.
