Wingate's Second Half Surge Too Much For Women's Basketball

Box Score

PEMBROKE – The visiting Wingate Bulldogs trailed by one point at the intermission, but used a 13-4 run to start the second half and carry the lead for the remainder of the game for the 56-51 win over the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon inside the English E. Jones Center.

The loss was the second straight for the Braves (1-3), while the Bulldogs (3-3) tallied its third-consecutive victory this season and second win in a row in the series between the two schools.

"It was a claw-back the whole second half and the reason was that we were not very efficient offensively," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "I think we have played pretty well defensively, but I just think we are fouling too much."

Senior Jazmine Kemp notched a team-high 11 points, while Kamille Horne and Kierra Haney registered eight and nine points, respectively. Haney also pulled down 11 boards as sophomore guard Jasmine Huntley finished the contest with a game-high six assists.

The Black and Gold logged 11 team fouls in the first half which resulted in seven made free throws for the Bulldogs, but the second half brought about double the free throws on 14 UNCP fouls. Despite claiming 17 field goals and seven three-pointers, the Braves clinched just 10 charity stripe shots compared to 21 by Wingate.

Wingate utilized 15 points from the bench and 10 off UNCP's turnovers, but the Braves proved to be more dominate in the paint with 16 points compared to 12. Both Morgan McGee and Shelby Tricoli ended the contest with a shared team-high 14 points, while Chantal Dunbar put up 10 points.

UNCP kept Wingate scoreless through the first 3:38 of the game and held the lead the entire first half including its largest lead of seven with 15:27 left in the first half, but the first points of the second stanza on a tip-in by McGee gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game.

A quick trey by Kemp put the Braves ahead for the final time at the 17:47 mark on the assist by Huntley. In the final minute UNCP continue to chip away at the lead as Eboné Stevens used a long three-pointer and Haney nailed the tip-in to bring the final score to within five.

UNCP will be back in action on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. contest against region rival Coker (1-4) inside the Harris E. & Louise H. DeLoach Center in Hartsville, S.C.
