Coker Holds Off Women's Basketball For Three-Point Victory

Box Score

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Despite out-rebounding Coker by eight, the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team fell in another close loss, 61-58, on Wednesday evening as the Cobras used 33 points from bench players to collect the regional victory inside the DeLoatch Center.

UNCP (1-4) dropped its third-straight match in this season, as well as third in the series with Coker (2-4) who extended its winning streak to two games.

Senior Jazmine Kemp finished the game with her first double-double of the season as she drained 10 points with 5-for-8 shooting from the field and 10 rebounds with eight on the defensive boards. Senior Kamille Horne nailed five treys for a game-high 15 points, while sophomore Jasmine Huntley notched 14. Forward Kierra Haney grabbed four offensive and seven defensive boards to finish with a game-high 11 rebounds.

Both teams collected 16 points in the paint and 13 off turnovers, but UNCP registered nine on second chance opportunities. UNCP trailed at the half by 10 points, but regrouped and outscored the Cobras by seven after using 45.2 percent shooting from the field in the final 20 minutes.

UNCP hustled out to a quick start as Horne gave the Braves a six-point lead on a pair of 3-pointers and extended the lead to eight points on the layup by Haney. The defense kept the Cobras off the board until the 16:03 mark on the trey by Kiara Shoats, but despite holding a nine-point advantage at the 7:12 mark, Coker utilized a 20-1 run heading into intermission.

The Cobras put the first points in the bucket less than 10 seconds in to the second stanza to extend their lead to 13 points and held a double-digit lead until Kemp drained a jumper at the 6:12 mark. UNCP was still down by eight points with a minute and a half left before the end of the game and finished the game on a 7-2 run as Huntley nailed the final shot at the buzzer.

Of the 11 Cobras that saw time on the court, 10 posted at least three points with Sydney Shull leading the way with 10 points and Kelley Godbout and Priscilla Fenty each trailing with nine.

The Black and Gold will open up Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader against Lander (5-2) inside the Horne Arena in Greenwood, S.C.
