Women's Basketball Doubles Up St. Andrews

PEMBROKE – Senior Jazmine Kemp and sophomore Airico Williams drained double-digit points as the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 36.1 percent from the field en route to defeating the visiting St. Andrews Knights on Wednesday afternoon inside the English E. Jones Center.

The Braves (2-8) extended their winning-streak in the series with St. Andrews (8-5) to eight games and used the victory to snap a seven-game drought in the win column, while the Knights' used this contest as a mid-season exhibition battle.

Kemp inched herself to within eight points of entering into UNCP's 1000-Point Club after notching 15 in the contest including nine in the first half, while Williams posted a career-high 10 points to mark the first double-digit performance of her collegiate career. Both Eboné Stevens and Katelyn Mitchell were just a point shy of a double-digit game.

On the defensive side of the ball, Mary Robinson and Mitchell led the team with seven rebounds as Williams, Kemp and Jonissa Monley finished the game with six boards apiece and senior Avae' Hardy snatched up a trio of steals.

"I thought we were inconsistent," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "I mean we had some pretty bad stretches offensively. I thought we did a very good job on the glass particularly in the second half."

Besides out-shooting the Knights, the Braves also pulled down 53 rebounds while St. Andrews managed 32, and the Black and Gold knocked down eight trey's compared to the Knights' solo three-pointer. UNCP went 12-for-30 from field in the second half to shoot 40.0 percent as a team, while 11-of-13 players collected at least two points during the contest.

The Braves capitalized on an 11-point run over a two-minute span in the first half to control a 15-point lead, 25-10, and entered into the half leading by 10 points. In the second stanza, UNCP's defense held the Knights to only five field goals and a meager 13 points, while UNCP finished the final 20 minutes with 35 points and lead by as much as 37 with just 1:26 remaining in the game.

The Knights were led by Tyesha McLean with 11 points and four steals, while Ashley Jennings collected eight rebounds. St. Andrews shot 7.1 percent from the arc and a mere 22.8 percent from the field.

UNCP will be back in action in the New Year against Peach Belt Conference rival GRU Augusta (2-7, 1-1 PBC) on Saturday in the opening contest of the doubleheader with tipoff set for 3:30 p.m. inside the English E. Jones Center in Pembroke. For ticket information click HERE.
