COLUMBUS, Ga. – Mike McClellan's RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning brought Jackson Oliver scurrying home with the game-winning run as Columbus State rallied back from a late deficit to top the 17th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team on Saturday evening at Ragsdale Field.
The loss marked the first of the season for the Braves (7-1, 1-1 PBC) who still managed to put up a double-digit hit total for the seventh time this season. The Cougars (4-5, 1-1) have now won three of the last four matchups in the series.
UNCP got at least one base hit from eight different players, Dalton Knight who drove in a run on a 2-for-5 outing. All-American Jordan Edgerton singled and doubled on a 2-for-5 outing as well. Jimmy Obermark (2-for-5), Jackson Oliver (2-for-4, 2 R) and Dustin Averett (2-for-4, 2 RBI) each turned in a pair of hits for the hosts.
Brandon Estrain (0-1) struck out one and allowed just two hits in 1-1/3 innings of relief, but took the loss anyway by yielding the run in the bottom of the 10th. Trey Watson (1-0) surrendered just two hits over the final three innings from the mound to grab the win in relief for Columbus State.
The Cougars drew first blood on Averett's one-out single in the fourth, but the Braves knotted the score back up on Ben Schmucker's triple down the right field line in the sixth, and then took a 2-1 advantage on Knight's one-out single in the seventh.
Brendan Collins singled to lead off the bottom of the eighth for the Cougars, and the host put a runner into scoring position moments later when Oliver (fielder's choice) stole second. That would set the table for Averett's RBI single to the gap in right field that, inevitably, sent the game into extra innings.
The squads will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. UNCP righty Connor Pratt (2-0, 6.00 ERA) is slated to take the hill against CSU right-hander Bryan Headley (1-1, 0.90).
