Box Score DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Junior guard Kamille Horne logged 18 points on a career-high six 3-point buckets, but it was not enough as the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team fell in Peach Belt Conference action to nationally-ranked North Georgia, 87-69, on Saturday afternoon in Memorial Hall.
Horne led a quartet of Lady Braves who finished with double-figures points, including 16 points from Jazmine Kemp and 10 points from Kierra Haney. Coming off the bench, Jasmine Huntley tallied 10 points for the UNCP offense. The Lady Braves finished the day shooting 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the floor, including a 60 percent (9-of-15) clip from the perimeter.
The Nighthawks relied on the 21-point brace of Jordan Livesay, while Mimi Hill chipped in another 18 points to the winning effort. Stephanie Huffman and Lauren Pounds tallied 12 points apiece to round out the double-digit scorers. North Georgia took advantage of its defense, winning the rebounding contest, 46-29, including 21 offensive rebounds compared to just seven offensive boards from the Black and Gold.
"I thought we struggled to stop them all game, but they're a very good offensive team who is averaging 81.5 points per game. We played pretty well offensively in the first half with only four turnovers, and then early in the second half we gave up some offensive rebounds and that was the difference in the game. When you make mistakes they make you pay for it because they're a very good team. We just have to get ready to go again tomorrow at Young Harris," said UNCP head coach John Haskins.
The match was close coming out of the intermission, the Nighthawks leading by just three points, 40-37, but a 15-7 opening-run quickly gave North Georgia a double-digit advantage, 55-44. UNCP worked to cut the deficit, but the Nighthawks offense continued to roll, with the help of Livesay who was perfect (6-of-6) from the field in the second frame. A free throw from Kaylee Akin gave North Georgia its biggest lead of the game, 78-58, with 5:48 remaining in the game, as the Nighthawks cruised to victory, closing out the game with a jump shot from Akin.
UNCP struck first with a layup from Haney at the 18:21 mark, in a back-and forth first half that saw seven lead changes. UNCP found much of its success from 3-point territory, connecting on 6-of-8 (75 percent) triples. The Lady Braves came away with just four turnovers in the opening half, while the Nighthawks turned the ball over 10 times.
The Lady Braves are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Young Harris, Ga., for a contest with Young Harris (16-4, 11-2) at 1 p.m. inside of the YHC Basketball Arena.
