Flagler Holds Off Men's Basketball To Take 76-72 Win

Box Score

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team rallied back from a six-point deficit to tie the game with 49 seconds left in regulation but Flagler used clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to pull out the 76-72 win on Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference East Division action in Flagler Gymnasium.

The loss was the third-straight for the Braves (14-14, 5-13 PBC), while the victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Flagler (11-14, 5-13).

Sophomore Brandon Winford notched his 10th double-double of his career with a team-best 15 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Griffin Pittman collected 14 points, while Ben Jacobs added 10 points and Quamain Rose pulled down 10 boards. Freshman Keysheen Hinton dished out a career-high five assists with Alex Bradley tallying four. The Braves shot 37.9 percent from the field and outrebounded Flagler 42-37.

Flagler's Richard Brown and Jerrell Oxendine each posted 17 points, while bench player Adam Jones put up 15. Desmond Gibson notched a team-best 10 rebounds, nine of which came on the defensive boards. The Saints finished the game shooting 45.6 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from the 3-point line.

Each team logged 13 turnovers throughout the contest that saw five tied scores and 19 lead changes. The Braves managed an 11-3 run in the first five minutes of the game to take their largest lead of nine points at the 14:47 mark on Winford's jumper, however, Flagler brought the score to within two points, 20-18, on a layup by Brown with 12:12 left in the half.

Despite UNCP down by one at the half, Jacobs put the Braves on top with a jump shot 30 seconds into the second stanza. The squads remained close for the entirety of the game, but free throws by Jones and Oxendine closed out the last 23 seconds of play and tilted the advantage in Flagler's favor for the four-point win.

The Braves will close out the regular season portion of their 2013-14 campaign on Saturday when they head to Aiken, S.C., to battle No. 10 USC Aiken (23-3, 15-1) in a 3:30 p.m. contest in the Convocation Center.
