Walk Off Blast In 13th Helps Baseball Top No. 18 Montevallo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PEMBROKEBrett Huffman's two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning helped the 15th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team walk off with an 11-10 victory over 18th-ranked Montevallo in the series opener on Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

The victory capped a wild ending to a 4-1/2 hour game that saw the squads combine for 39 hits and 26 runners left on the base paths. The Braves looked to have won the game on Chad Whitehead's shot to left field with two outs in the 11th inning, but the run was negated after Whitehead failed to touch the first base bag before being mobbed by his teammates down the first base line.

All-American Jordan Edgerton doubled, walked twice and drove in a pair of runs on a 4-for-5 hitting line, while Drew Cole plated a trio of runs on a 3-for-day at the plate. Ben Schmucker scored once on a 3-for-7 tally, while Max Gagnon drove in a pair of crossed the plate twice on a 3-for-4 outing. Huffman's blast – his second of the season – highlighted a 2-for-7 (2 R) performance for the Salisbury native.

Jackson Slaid (5-for-7) homered twice for Montevallo who got multi-hit days from seven players.

Newcomer Zach Andrews (1-1) struck out two, scattered five hits and allowed a pair of earned runs over four solid innings of relief to pick up the win for UNCP, who also got a clutch outing from reliever Brandon Estrain who allowed just one hit in 1-2/3 scoreless innings of work. Edward Brandsema (0-2) inherited a 10-9 lead in the 13th frame, but took the loss after allowing two hits and as many earned runs.

UNCP (9-2, 2-2 PBC) scratched the scoreboard for four hits and a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth to forge a 7-1 lead, but Montevallo (9-4, 2-2) rallied for seven runs over the next three innings to take an 8-7 lead. Cole's sac fly in the bottom of the frame would eventually send the game into extra frames.

A hit by pitch with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the 13th inning would give the Falcons their second lead of the extra frames, but UNCP got a leadoff single from Zade Denton before Huffman hammered a 1-0 offering from Brandsema deep over the right field fence two batters later.
