Flagler Too Much For Women's Basketball

Box Score

St. Augustine, Fla. – In a physical contest that saw over 40 combined team fouls, the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team fell to Flagler, 72-54, in a Saturday-afternoon Peach Belt Conference contest inside of the Flagler Gym.

Despite the loss, Kierra Haney turned in her 11th double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jazmine Kemp led the way for the UNCP offense with 14 points, while Avae' Hardy chipped in another 10 points.

The Saints were powered by the 22-point performance of Williesha Spencer and another 20 points from Treva Mason. Rounding out the trio of double-digit performers was Simone High who tallied 13 points. Mason grabbed 13 boards to finish the day with a double-double.

"I thought we competed well and did some good things, but we weren't consistent enough. We put them on the free throw line too much. Rebounding and free throws were the difference in the game. We had a nice little run to take the lead and then just couldn't finish. It was a good game, there just wasn't enough consistent scoring," said UNCP head coach John Haskins

UNCP struck first with a jumper from Kemp in a first half that stayed close the majority of the way. The Saints took advantage of an aggressive UNCP team, by connecting on 15-of-19 (78.9 percent) shots from the charity stripe. Back-to-back free throw shots from Latesha Johnson put Flagler up 26-21 with three minutes before the break. Flagler closed out the half scoring five-straight points, to take a 35-26 leave into intermission.

The Lady Braves opened the second frame with a 13-0 run over the first four minutes of the half to take a 39-35 lead. A layup from Mason and a good free throw to complete the three-point play put the Saints up by one, 44-43. Less than 10 seconds later a technical foul by UNCP brought Spencer to the charity stripe where she drained four-consecutive free throw shots. Spencer knocked down a triple to spark a 12-point run that gave Flagler a 65-48 lead, and the Saints would stay in control till the final buzzer.

UNCP will close out the 2013-14 regular season next week when the squad travels to Aiken, S.C., for a 5:30 p.m. contest against USC Aiken (9-17, 7-10) in the Convocation Center.
