PEMBROKE – Visiting and 18th-ranked Montevallo rallied back from an early 4-1 deficit with five runs in the fifth inning and plated four more insurance runs in the eighth to salvage its weekend series with the No. 15 UNC Pembroke baseball team on an 11-6 win over the Braves on Sunday at Sammy Cox Field.
The setback snapped a three-game losing streak for the Braves (10-3, 3-3 PBC) who clinched the series victory with 11-10 (13 innings) and 8-0 triumphs over the Falcons on Saturday. Saturday's twinbill sweep marked the first time the Falcons (10-5, 3-3) had dropped consecutive outings this season.
Daniel Fraga doubled and drove in two runs to key a 2-for-5 outing for the hosts, who also got a 2-for-5 hitting line from Drew Cole. Zade Denton punched in a pair of runs as well to highlight a 1-for-4 day at the plate. All-American Will Fulmer doubled twice and drove in four runs on a 4-for-5 performance for Montevallo, while LSU transfer Jackson Slaid registered a 2-for-5 outing which included his third homer of the weekend.
Connor Pratt (2-1) yielded five earned runs on eight hits and a walk in 4-1/3 innings from the mound to take the loss for the Braves. Alex Pondick (3-0) allowed six earned runs on as many hits and a pair of walks to pick up the win for the Falcons.
Down 4-1 heading into the inning, the Falcons rallied for five runs in the fifth, including a 3-run homer by Vinny Rodriguez, to take the lead for good. UNCP whittled away at its deficit with a lone run in the bottom of the frame, but the Falcons pushed their lead back to two runs, 7-5, on Slaid's solo job in the seventh, and then scored four unearned runs in the eighth.
The Braves will close out a five-game home stand on Wednesday when they suit up to welcome region rival Erskine (9-1) to Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
