PEMBROKE – Brett Huffman homered for the second time in the last four games to give the 14th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team a lead it would never relinquish as the Braves coasted past 10-win Erskine with a 12-3 rout of the Flying Fleet on Wednesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
The victory helped the Braves (11-3) improve to 7-1 at home this season, while also marking the club's fourth win in their last five outings. The setback snapped a nine-game win streak for Erskine (10-2) who has now lost three-straight in the series with UNCP as well.
Max Gagnon (3-for-4, 2 R) and Drew Cole (3-for-5, 2 RBI) both turned in a trio of hits for the Black & Gold, while Daniel Fraga scored three times on a 2-for-4 outing. Ben Schmucker (2-for-5, 2 R) registered a pair of hits for the hosts as well. Logan Galliher singled and scored twice on a 2-for-3 night at the plate for the Flying Feet.
Jordan DeLoatch (2-0) struck out five and allowed three runs (two earned) over seven solid innings from the hill to grab a win for the second-straight appearance, while Alex Britt and Zach Andrews both pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Austin Gambrell (2-1) was handed his first loss of the season for the visitors after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and a pair of walks in just 3-2/3 innings from the hill.
Erskine drew first blood on Cody Spence's two-out single in the second, but Huffman hit a towering 3-run home run in the bottom of the frame to put UNCP up for good. The Braves led 9-2 by the end of the fourth inning, and then added a trio of insurance runs in the seventh for good measure.
The Braves will be back in action again this weekend then they travel to Milledgeville, Ga., to face Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia College (7-3, 2-1 PBC) in a three-game set at John Kurtz Field.
